General Information Physics 51 is a two-semester introductory course in the Physics and Astronomy Department at Pomona College for students who have had or are currently taking calculus. This course is for upper-level students who are interested in physics as a scientific field, but whose primary interests are in other fields of study, especially pre-medical students and life-science majors. The course will use the text by Randall Knight, which is an excellent reference book for students later in their careers. Physics 51a will focus on four major areas: Newton's Laws, Conservation Laws, Newtonian Mechanics, and Thermodynamics. It will highlight the physical principles behind modern instrumentation in geology, chemistry, biology and other scientific disciplines.
