Six Ideas That

Shaped Physics

This photo, which shows the star-shaped city of Moscow as seen from the International Space Station, illustrates physics from all six units. The space station orbits as described by Newton's laws. The city lights and the solar panels display the deep connection between electricity and light, as well as the law of conservation of energy. The aurora illustrates the earth's magnetic field and quantum states of atoms. Magnetism itself is a consequence of relativity. Finally, these rich processes are possible because the universe began in a low-entropy state.  Credit: NASA
