Known Errors in the Second Printing of Unit N, 1/e

NOTE: In all that follows I will use <letter name> to represent a Greek-letter variable, ^ to indicate that the next quantity is superscripted, _ to indicate that the next quantity is subscripted, and boldface to indicate a vector quantity. I will also go against typographical convention and put punctuation outside of quotation marks to make whatever is enclosed in quotes exactly reflect what is (or should be) in the text. 

Error notices added most recently (1/23/99 and 2/9/99) are marked in red.

• page xii, last paragraph before section 4, first line: "bee" should be "be".
• page xii, last paragraph before section 4, last line: "than chapters" should be "then chapters".
• page 13, problem N1T.3, third line: insert close quotation mark between "photograph" and "showing".
• page 19, list below equation N2.7, item 3, last line: <delta>v / <delta>t should be <delta>v <delta>t (in other words, delete the division sign).
• page 41, problem N3S.4, fourth line: "the latter accelerate" should be "the latter to accelerate".
• page 53, example N4.8, second line: m should be equal to 10 kg, not 25 kg, to agree with the calculation.
• page 55, 4th line from the end: "moves a" should be "moves in a".
• page 57, second Synthetic problem should be numbered "N4S.2" not "N4S.3".
• page 57, problem N4S.5, first line: "Imagine that unpowered" should be "Imagine that an unpowered".
• page 57, problem N4S.5, fifth line: change period after "constant speed" to a question mark.
• page 57, problem N4S.7, replace "During a certain interval of time" with "Imagine that during the time interval 0 <= t <= 2 s".
• page 67, equation N5.20 and the line above: the <delta>t in "a_2<delta>t" should be squared (occurs twice).
• page 68, caption to Figure N5.4, last line: "example N5.4" should be "example N5.5".
• page 68, example N5.5, solution, first line: delete the first doubled "the".
• page 68, example N5.5, solution, third line: "9.8 m/s" should be "9.8 m/s^2".
• page 69, last paragraph, first line: "should anything" should be "should have anything".
• page 89, problem N6S.4, last sentence: "What is the magnitude of the force" should be "What are the magnitudes of the forces".
• page 93, beginning of the last line before equation N7.4: change the <phi> to <alpha>.
• page 99, under "KNOWNS": the top component of the acceleration vector should be "+5.0 m/s^2" not "+5.0 m/s" (square the unit of seconds).
• page 100, example N7.5, problem statement: delete the "the" at the beginning of the fifth line.
• page 101, summary, item I.D., second line: "indicating external" should be "indicating the external".
• page 101, summary, item III.A.1: "because atom in box" should be "because atoms in the box".
• page 102, problem N7T.9, third and fourth lines: "its coefficient of friction" should be "its drag coefficient".
• page 103, problem N7B.7, last line: put in a period before the final close parenthesis.
• page 103, problem N7S.14, first line of part (a): "gripping friction" should be "static friction".
• page 112, equation N8.13b just after the final equals sign: - m_A g should be - m_B g.
• page 150, first line after equation N11.1: "is vector" should be "is a vector".
• page 154, example, N11.1, solution, equation 1: v_0z should be multiplied by t.
• page 156, first paragraph, third to last line: "other kinds problems" should be "other kinds of problems".
• page 160, problem N11T.1, third line: "slips of the" should be "slips off the".
• page 171, last line before equation N12.29: reference should be to equation N12.10, not N12.17.
• page 175, seventh BASIC problem should be numbered N12B.7, not N12S.7.
• page 176, problem N12R.2, second and third lines: change "about the 6-story level from a bungee cord tied to the top of a 14-story (42 m)" to "about the 7-story level from a bungee cord tied to the top of a 15-story (45 m)".
• page 189, problem N13B.4, last line: change "382" to "384".
• page 189, problem N13B.8, middle line: change "30 times larger than" to "0.723 times".
• page 198, example N14.1, last line above equation N14.25: v^2 - GM/r should be v^2 - 2GM/r"
• page 198, example N14.1, equation N14.27b: "4.4 x 10^8" should be "4.4 x 10^7" and "1.44" should be "1.05".
• page 198, example N14.1, equation N14.27c: "2.44" should be "2.05" and "1.35" should be "1.66".
• page 198, example N14.1, last line: "just inside" should be "just outside".
• page 201, first line after equation N14.36: reference to exercise N14X.9 should be to exercise N14X.10.
• page 201, equation N14.27, between the first and second equals signs: change the quantity in parentheses from r_c / r_f to r_c / r_c.
• page 205, problem N14S.13, third-to-last line: "Then show use" should be "Then use".
