Known Errors in the First Printing of Unit

NOTE:
In all that follows I will use <letter name> to
represent a Greek-letter variable, ^ to indicate that the next
quantity is superscripted, _ to indicate that the next quantity is
subscripted, and boldface to indicate a vector quantity. I will also
go against typographical convention and put punctuation
outside of quotation marks to make whatever is enclosed in
quotes exactly reflect what is (or should be) in the
text.
- Inside front cover: units of 4¹k/c corrected to
N.m.s/C^2.
- Inside front cover: masses of the electron and proton have
been added.
- Inside front cover: the integrals referred to on page 25 have
been added.
- page xvi, section 9: add some omitted names.
- Page 5, exercise E1X.2, second line: "an U tape" and "an T
tape" should be "a U tape" and "a T tape."
- Page 13, summary, item III.A.1: insert dot between N and m^2
in units of k.
- Page 21, first line after equation E2.5: r^2_Pi
should be simply r_Pi.
- Page 23, example E2.1, first paragraph of solution: this was
rewritten for clarity.
- Page 24, equations E2.15 and E2.16: top component of column
vectors should be negative.
- Page 25, equation E2.18: top components of column vectors
should be negative.
- Page 25, equation E2.19a: numerator of first quantity in
brackets should be positive.
- Page 25, equation E2.19a: numerator of second quantity in
brackets should be simply 1 - 1.
- Page 25, equation E2.19b: the quantity in square root in the
denominator last equality should be 1 + (2r/L)^2 instead of
1 - (2r/L)^2.
- Page 29, problem E2S.2, first line: insert space between "has"
and "charges".
- Page 29, problem E2S.5, last line: should read "of a dipole"
instead of "of dipoles".
- Page 29, figure E2.9: central dot should be labeled P.
- Page 30, answer to exercise E2X.5, first line: xdx =
(1/2)u should be xdx = (1/2)du.
- Page 43, problems E3B.5 and E3B.6, third line: units of area
should be m^2, not m^3.
- Pages 52, 53, 55, and 56: will add missing sidebars.
- Page 89, problem E6A.1, second line: reference should be to
Figure E6.14, not E6.15.
- Page 89, figure E6.14: delete period before R_5 in the bottom
line.
- Page 100, first sidebar: move sidebar up to equation E7.24
from E7.25.
- Page 104, equation E7.32: the V in the numerator and
the V in the denominator should be script.
- Page 104, equation E7.39, first line, last equality: there
should be an R in the denominator of that expression.
- Page 120, answer to exercise E8X.4: should be "into the paper"
not "out of the paper".
- Page 123, figure E9.1a: battery and direction of current
should be reversed.
- Page 125, equation E9.7: quantity on the right should be
negative.
- Page 129: will add missing sidebars.
- Page 140, equation E10.9: will move dL inside the sum
for clarity.
- Page 141, equation E10.10: replaced
(kdx/c)(1/r^2_Pi) by
(k/c)(dx/r^2_Pi) for clarity.
- Page 142, equation labeled E10.17: should be labeled E10.16.
- Page 146, summary, item III.C: equation should be labeled
E10.15.
- Page 147, problems E10T.7 and E10T.8: answer sets for these
problems were been swapped.
- Page 148, top line of second column: big R should be
small r.
- Page 148, problem E10S.6, last line: x should be
R.
- Page 152, figure at top of page (Figure E11.2): will add
missing caption.
- Page 166, caption to figure E12.4: will be rewritten for
clarity.
- Page 169, just above exercise E12X.9: added note that
4¹k/c = 377 ohms.
- Page 169, just below item two in list of principles: close
parenthesis added after "E12S.3".
- Page 169, last sidebar: will be rewritten for clarity.
- Page 170, first full paragraph, second line: "vector" should
be "vector's."
- Page 170, second full paragraph: Added "Similarly," to the
front and joined with preceeding paragraph.
- Page 183, eighth line: E_y should be
B_y.
- Page 185, first line of last paragraph: add "/ c"
before period.
- Page 186, problem E13T.7, answers A, B, C, and D: insert
Coulomb constant k in numerator.
- Page 186, problems E13T.8 and E13T.9, last line of problem
statement: rewritten for clarity and better alignment.
- Page 194, last paragraph above section E14.4, fourth line:
"corrolary" should be "corollary."
- Page 199, last paragraph above section E14.6, sixth line:
added "law" between "0" and "bear."
- Page 204, problem E14R.1, second-to-last line in left column:
units of dB/dt are MN/(C.s) not MNC/s.
- Page 204, problem E14A.1: will be rewritten for clarity and
correctness (in specific, a <lambda> was missing in
the numerator of the equation just before part b, and the
reference frame in part b needed to be specified as being the
frame shown in Figure E14.1b).
- Page 207, second line below equation E15.6: insert "is
positive" after E_ccw,avg.
- Page 216, problem E15S.1, last line: a close parenthesis is
needed before the period.
- Page 216, answer to exercise E15X.6, first line: reference
should be to equation E15.11.
- Page 221, just below equation E16.5: will rewrite for clarity
(specifically to note that <omega> can be called
either phase rate or angular frequency), and a period was added.
- Page 223, note in equation E16.9: "phase x-velocity"
should be "phase speed".
- Page 223, second line below equation E16.9: "phase velocity"
should be "phase speed".
- Page 227, summary, item III.C, second line: remove extra
vertical bar in equation.
- Page 228, glossary: definitions of "angular frequency" and
"phase velocity" will rewrite for clarity and consistency.
- Page 229, last problem in the B group: should be labeled
"E16B.7", not "E16S.7".
- Page 229, problem E16S.4: will rewrite to make it clear that
it is OK to assume that the vector directions are perpendicular to
the wave's direction of motion.
- Page 233, equation E17.8: <epsilon> was made
larger.
- Page 238, last line: c / <nu> should be
c / f.
- Page 240, summary, item II.B.3: E_0 should be squared.
- Page 241, problem E17S.2: will rewrite to make it clear that
you can wrap 2000 turns of wire per meter around the
solenoid form.
