Known Errors in the First Printing of Unit
Q, 1/e
NOTE:
In all that follows I will use <letter name> to
represent a Greek-letter variable, ^ to indicate that the next
quantity is superscripted, _ to indicate that the next quantity is
subscripted, and boldface to indicate a vector quantity. I will also
go against typographical convention and put punctuation
outside of quotation marks to make whatever is enclosed in
quotes exactly reflect what is (or should be) in the
text.
- page xv: fourth-to-last line of second paragraph: change C to
Q (2 times).
- page xvi, section 9: added some missing names.
- page 7, second line below equation Q1.1: "phase speed" should
be "phase rate".
- page 13, summary, item II.A.2: "phase speed" should be "phase
rate".
- page 21, exercise Q2X.2: rewritten to clarify that we are
making an approximation.
- page 29, problem Q2R.1: change 850 m to 1.7 km and change last
sentence to read "Roughly how far are you from the foghorns now?"
- page 30, answer to exercise Q2X.2: add "in this limit" before
the final period.
- page 39, example Q3.4, second line of solution: change capital
<theta> to small <theta>.
- page 40, fourth line from top: change capital
<theta> to small <theta>.
- page 43, problem Q3S.10: added the note that 1 league is
approximately 3 miles.
- page 47, third line above equation Q4.2: the reference should
be to chapter E4, not E6.
- page 51, last paragraph: rewritten to clarify that the X-rays
are scattering off electrons, not vice versa.
- page 66, example Q5.5, text below equation Q5.15: extensively
rewritten to make clear that displaying the interference pattern
is difficult, not impossible, and to discuss some of the
difficulties involved.
- page 69, problem Q5S.12, third-to-last line: k changed
to k_B (2 times).
- page 76, figure Q6.5: replaced with a photograph of a
real electron interference pattern in the process of
developing instead of the clearly bogus and misleading simulation
that was inadvertently placed in the first printing. (I
think that this change was successfully made: it depended
on getting permission in time.)
- page 104, second line below equation Q8.10: "frequency" should
be "phase rate".
- page 109, summary, item IV.A, second line: "phase speed"
should be "phase rate".
- page 111, problem Q8B.4, fourth line: "phase speed" should be
"phase rate".
- page 140, answer to exercise Q10X.4: the isolated letter l
should be script.
- page 152, problem Q11R.2, second line: the units of the
capacity should be "A.h", not "A.hr".
- page 173, last full paragraph: rewritten to clarify that it is
nuclei that have optimal N/Z above A > 209 that
are unstable against alpha-decay (nuclei with non-optimal
N/Z may undergo beta decay).
